Tue, Jan 18, 2011
Dear Raj Bhowmik Movement,
I am Trishala Ravendran, of Abacus Montessori
School, Class: 6.
The students of our class would like to thank
you for showing us how plastic can harm the
earth.
I would also like to take this chance to ask you
to make me an ambassador for our school.
I would also like to take this chance to ask you
to send 50 cloth bags to my house.
I live at Thiruvanmiyur, Adayar, Chennai-600 041
I would like this because our class is going to
give them round our neighborhood and give them
the first step to making a better planet.
i believe that we as children can make a better
place of this world and guide the adults to take
the first steps towards it.
yours sincerely,

Raj Bhowmik Plastic Free Planet Movement (RB-PFP
Movement)
Sri Sankara
Senior Secondary School, Chennai.
January 18, 2011.
(Submitted by SPF Volunteer)
The RB-PFP Team was invited to address 160 children from Sri
Sankara Senior Secondary School, Chennai. Children who were
in grade 8 about age 13 were part of the program.
Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School believes in providing
opportunities to children by exposure and actively engaging
the children to be part of the real life projects. One such
effort was the children being part of the RB-PFP Movement.
The RB-PFP interaction was to help children become aware of
the active use of plastic bags in our daily existence and
how easily and freely we use it abundantly & throw away
without thinking to pick up another one.
An interaction with the Vice Principal of the school Mrs.
Meenakshi S prior to the event gave a brief idea about the
school’s plan to actively participate with the RB-PFP
Movement for the coming year by involving the students and
the parent community at large. The vision of the school is
to make the school premise Plastic Free.

Children at Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School were very
enthusiastic to participate and discuss about how Plastic
enters the eco system and the food chain. They were very
motivated to hear that “children” were chosen for a movement
and that it was the children who could make a difference.
The children at Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School were
extremely keen to become volunteers and spread the message
to fellow students in other grades and continue keeping in
touch to help the movement grow. The RB-PFP Team has set up
a student council in school that will be active to carry the
message in the current year.
It was heart touching to hear one of the students explain
their experience of standing for a cause and how passionate
children are when they believe in something that excites
them. In her words – “I love a tree in my neighborhood and
some people were cutting it. When I hugged the tree to save
it, the people thought I was mad and called my parents who
just took me away. She said, I want to stand up for a cause
like RB-PFP because I need support of an organization in
what I believe. One cannot do it alone single handedly”
The economy of the bag and the affordability was discussed
as children understood what was needed to spread the word in
their neighborhood, shops, complexes, friends and relatives,
chemists and temples. This list was also suggested by them.
The RB-PFP interaction focused on simple strategies that
could be incorporated at homes to stop plastics, how would
they create a need in the local community about the bag and
how the Raj Bhowmik Group would support the RB-PFP School
ambassadors by providing them with the RB-PFP Cloth bag
supply to continue spreading the message of a Plastic Free
World.
Our Founder, Raj Bhowmik’s vision is to spark creativity &
motivate children, so that they understand that there is so
much more to learn & achieve to enhance their lives. In his
words-

“Remember
that the key for society at large is to come out and
consciously support movements like these. Let them
remember that when they needed it the most, Society
had come out to support them wholeheartedly. If we
all unite in our thoughts and take some small but
significant steps today, then we can all have a
better tomorrow. There is never a wrong time to do
the right thing. Let that time start from today. We
can undo our mistakes of the past. The change will
not happen today. It will take years and maybe more.
But better late than never! “

Sri Sankara School have expressed their keen desire to
collaborate with the RB-PFP Movement to make the first step
by ensuring all children from the next academic year carry
lunch in cloth bags to school. They thanked Raj Bhowmik as
the RB-PFP talk created a platform to bring a cohesive group
together to spread the essence of a Green Planet to 2000
parents and children so that this would be like one step
taken together as a community.

Secondary School, Chennai with Raj Bhowmik's book

Raj Bhowmik Plastic Free Planet Movement (RB-PFP)
in Abacus
Montessori School, Chennai
52 young, enthusiastic children from Abacus Montessori
School participated in the RB-PFP Movement interaction
organized in their school from Grades 5 and 6.
“Everytime I go to the shopping market I get along at least
12 plastic bags. Now when I go, I will remember what we have
discussed and carry my own shopping bag.”, declared the
school principal Mrs Joan Elango.
During the interaction children understood the uses of
Plastic in their everyday lives and how one could easily
substitute it with natural products such as cotton, jute &
coconut that are bio degradable and go back to the earth.

The RB-PFP Interaction focused on how the plastic gets into
our food chain and how it is affecting various species that
will directly/ indirectly affect man some day. Enthusiastic
children responded how they have seen reduction of plastic
in the International market and voices made strong
suggestions of how they could carry this Plastic Free
Message in their communities, family business houses, homes
and neighborhoods.
Children were touched when they understood how the Raj
Bhowmik Group supported their dream and passion and how
sometimes as children we believe in a cause but the greatest
hindrance is raw material. Here they thanked Raj Bhowmik who
appreciated and nurtured young dreams & fuelled them in
action through these bags were being distributed to the
children freely, when they wanted to carry the message in
the community.
In a child’s word, she said that “parents always think that
we are too small to believe in something. They think we are
just saying something without believing that we are
serious.” It is heart touching to see how at this young age,
every child was so passionate about life and beliefs and how
adults sometimes can ignore it. Once we ignore it, sometime
that we use so regularly in our lives – Plastic & using it
becomes our second nature as we know nothing else.
Children at Abacus Montessori School were full of questions
about the process of bag making and were super excited to
carry the personal RB-PFP branded bag home for their family.
Children from the school have followed up by placing orders
to distribute the RB-PFP bags to their neighbors and other
members in the school.

Raj Bhowmik Plastic Free Planet Movement
Camp at Sangford School
in Kanchipuram - The Land of the 1000 Temples in India

The RB-PFP Bags reached the land of
1000 temples Kanchipuram. Young Priyadarshini – a 12 year
old RB-PFP Ambassador from Chennai and 8 year old Anirudh
played a key-part to reach out with this message to other
friends in Kanchi. SPF thanks little Priyadarshani and
Anirudh.
The generous Raj Bhowmik Group
not only supplied them with more RB-PFP Bags but also walked
along them to address children their age at Kanchipuram.
.JPG)
The RB-PFP Bags reached Sangford
Schools. The RB-PFP Young Ambassadors Team addressed
about 20 children from Sangford Schools who pledged to start
using cloth bags from their homes even before they can make
a difference outside.
Open minded parents took the Raj
Bhowmik Plastic Free Planet DREAM very seriously in
their homes – they chose to change their home plates that
were earlier plastic to another material
The completely biodegradable RB-PFP
Bags that are so light and easy to carry are suitable for
also carrying lunch boxes and water bottles to schools. This
is a serious option that children considered during the
presentation – To make choices of simple activities that
could alter the eco system. What is heartening is that man
has become such a large consumer that often we do not go
beyond our immediate needs to see what is happening to the
end product and the life cycle of what we are using.
Are we conscious? Do we intend to know?
Do we want to pause and look beyond our needs? These are
serious pointers that the Raj Bhowmik Plastic Free Planet
Bags choose to create.
As young ambassadors with fresh, new
minds and adult support through parents and school, this
intends to touch the hearts of many being simple in its
approach and strong in its impact.
Children are children – like clay that
can be moulded into thinking innovatively. The RB-PFP Bags
through this interaction only posed questions that helped
these young minds make choices for themselves to begin with
and introspect and become the Change.
“If you have a song
that your soul desires to sing, prepare the stage today to
sing it out loud!” Raj Bhowmik
The Raj Bhowmik Plastic Free Planet
Bags is a song of every heart that cares for Mother
Earth and chooses to give back to Her.

(Dump Yard Pictures: Heavy
load of plastic piled and dumped)
A plastic dump yard in the of "The Land of 1000 Temples"...What a
pity!
This site is common in many other cities across the country.
Plastic is often dumped in landfills and sometimes burnt. As
these are open lands, cattle graze near by and gets
affected.
Kanchipuram, being the land of temples, the 'Holy Prasad' is
given in easy plastic covers and the more the visitors to
the town, more plastic consumed, and hence it results in
more dumping in the outskirts of the city.
The Raj Bhowmik Plastic Free
Planet Movement'sefforts is to help individuals
in the community understand the life cycle of a product and
become aware of the use.

A letter written to Soulbath Peace Foundation by the
Principal of Sangford School:
...Children took an
oath saying that they will not use plastics
hereafter. Furthermore, they declared that they are
interested to spread this news to the neighbors and
friends and they said that they will insist
everybody about the disadvantages of using plastics.

Every Drop Counts!
Small steps... where no one
has ever gone before...
To promote the spirit of the "Raj
Bhowmik Plastic Free Planet Movement" and create awareness
at the grass-root level, SPF distributes FREE Cloth bags in
bulk and educates the road-side shops and street vendors who
cannot afford buying cloth bags.
We need to reach in with
the awareness of the urgency of the plastic-free planet
movement to the grass-root level
if a real change has to
happen anytime soon.
These efforts might be just tiny
drops across small and remote corners today, but one day these
very drops will proudly be a part of the well-spread ocean.
In the fresh abundant surrounding the small drops might be
forgotten... But did the drop ever bother to drop there?
- Raj Bhowmik
